Gerard's Mustard Tart

Time for French Fridays with Dorie! This is our second week cooking and baking through Dorie's Around My French Table and our dish this week is Gerard's Mustard Tart. Dorie says in her book that mustard in France is like ketchup here -- a favorite condiment, always available along side salt and pepper. That was a new bit of food trivia for me, I had no idea mustard was so popular there.

Often on this blog I write about a recipe and mention that picky husband "wouldn't try it" or "had one tiny bite and that was it" well, today is my turn to be picky. Yep, I get the picky pants award for the night, but I can't be too down on myself because I did make this and did try it, even though this tart combines my "don't like list" almost perfectly. There are only a few foods I don't like, these things are: eggs, mustard, black pepper, and onions. I have not liked them all since I was a child, and have tried them at different points through the years, hoping my taste buds have matured and I will find a new love (or tolerance) of these ingredients to no avail. Tonight was a night of trying again, with no success. Picky husband said the only thing missing was onions for it to have all of my "don't like list."

This tart looked perfect, I made a mini and scaled the recipe down to 1/3 of the original. I used some Jack Daniel's Honey Dijon as my mustard. I know it's not French. I'm sorry. Even though I'm not a mustard fan, I did try to find a true French mustard locally to no avail. I actually bought a six pack of the Jack Daniel's Honey Dijon a few months ago as a food gift for my husband, yes, my extra picky husband likes mustard. And I don't. Makes me feel kind of bad for picking on him for being so picky all of these years. I always think I will like mustard, it looks so good to me, especially as dipping sauce for a big Bavarian pretzel, and I always try it but never like it.

Anyway, the tart came together easily, I adore Dorie's tart dough recipe even if I have to add a couple extra teaspoons of water, it never lets me down and is so delicious! I made a full recipe of the tart dough and have the remaining two thirds in the freezer, I'm sure it'll be used up in no time.

I had a nice time putting this tart together, the delicate placing of the veggies on top, etc. It was a fun recipe to try even if it wasn't my cup of tea. My husband had a small piece and said it tasted really good but the texture wasn't his favorite, although he would eat the rest of it. My older two children didn't want to try it, but my youngest little guy liked it and had two tiny slices. I am so proud of that guy, no picky palate there :)

Thanks for visiting, I hope that all of my FFWD friends enjoyed eating this tart as much as I enjoyed making it :)

Love the mini...even a mustard/egg lover like me thinks a large one of these would be just way too much. I'm thinking the mini route would be just right. You did a great job on the top, too. Kudos to you for trying it anyway!

Your tart looks fab, even if it wasn't your thing. I adored it - which surprised me.

Your tart came out beautifully, and at least you had fun making it! My son doesn't like mustard, either - he wanted no part of it.

I didn't even think about using Jack Daniels mustard! Thanks for the idea for next time!

Great looking tart! I didn't let my kids try it, thought it would have been too spicy for them. Maybe I should have!

It looks so perfect! Mustard is big in Canada, we grow most of it in the world, I think. Even much of the French stuff is made here.
Sorry it wasn't your fave, but congrats for making it anyway!

I love that you made a mini and actually tried it even though it had all of your least favorite foods! Isn't it great to have one that isn't picky?

A new mustard! Course, I love mustard - but so glad you ventured into new territory - it's a lovely tart! Mini's are the best - easy and fun to make!

Kudos to you for making this recipe even though it wasn't something you would have chosen on your own. Your tart turned out so pretty and I like what you said about it being fun to make. That's so very important.
