Apple Turnovers -- Barefoot Bloggers


For our September Barefoot Bloggers Bonus recipe, Anne of Anne Strawberry picked Ina's Apple Turnovers , thanks Anne! What a wonderful fall recipe, one of the things I was most excited about in this recipe was the addition of dried cherries, I even made a special note on my grocery list about them, didn't forget to buy them, but did forget to put them in! I guess it was just too early for me to think straight when I made these that morning.



At first I was going to try to make my own puff pastry sheets, (even though Ina says to use store-bought), but I just couldn't resist the ease of Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry sheets, right there in the freezer section at Meijer. When I bought them I told myself I'd put them in the freezer at home, and if my 'from scratch' puff pastry didn't turn out I would use them as a fall back. Well, since things have been super busy here lately, I didn't even try to make my own puff pastry. Sorry! I promise I will at some point, and I promise I will let you all know how it goes.

My husband loves apple turnovers and I was so happy to make these for him and the kiddos. He did like them, but he said that he would have liked more 'sauciness' to them. I understand that. I told him that he is probably used to the commercially produced apple turnovers that use 'canned' apple pie filling that is really more goo than apples. I do have a favorite recipe that makes homemade "apple pie filling" complete with goo, that I use for my husband's favorite apple pie, I bet it would taste great in a puff pastry turnover as well so I will have to try that sometime soon. I had fun with this recipe, and it was a nice 'breakfast' treat. How could anyone not like an apple turnover? :)

We loved these too, Andrea! Your pictures are wonderful! Like you,I loved the ease of the frozen puff pastry sheets, but unlike you, I was never tempted to make my own. I don't think I'm quite ready to take on puff pastry yet. Maybe a couple more weeks of TWD cookies and I will be! Great job! Glad the turnovers were a hit, even if they weren't super-saucy!

I love your apple peeler - what a great gadget that is! I agree that this was a good recipe - and lots of leftovers too. If you want the apple to be mushier, just cook it a little first with a couple of tablespoons of water. It softens very quickly.

Wow, I can't believe you were going to make your own puff pastry. That would have been a serious amount of work!
I am glad you liked the turnovers, sans goo. Your story about your hubby and the artificial ones is hilarious. It is amazing what we get accustomed to.

Oh Man these look so good! You did an excellent job on your turnovers...they look wonderful. It sounds like your husband is the apple lover of all times! Oh, yummy! Yours look great! Funny how some of us look at this as dessert, some of us look at it as breakfast. Interesting. I don't think you missed too much with the cranberries/cherries. I thought they got a little tough in the baking process. Maybe it was the berries though.

I forgot to pull my apple peeler out and just did it by hand. Your turnovers look perfect the pastry made great layers. Great job!

You wanted to make your own puff pastry sheets? Oh My Goodness! Now that would have been a lot of work but tasty! These turnovers are good aren't they? Your apple turnovers are delicious looking and I LOVE your apple peeler. I was curious if the peeler worked well because I have been wanting to get one.

I baked mine tonight and loved them too. BTW, The Kecap Manis is so much cheaper if you have an Asian section at the grocery store. I bought mine for about 4 dollars. Just an FYI =)
