Chocolate Chunkers Two Ways -- Tuesdays with Dorie

This week for Tuesdays with Dorie, Claudia of Fool for Food picked Dorie's Chocolate Chunkers. Sorry readers, to be completely honest I wasn't very excited about these, I like cookies but chocolate cookies just aren't my thing. I would probably try every cookie at a cookie buffet except for cookies with chocolate dough. Chocolate chips cookies are fine, chocolate brownies are fine, but chocolate cookies? Nah. I do have one exception, that is a 'chocolate cookie' that bas buttermilk in the dough and a chocolate frosting that makes the whole thing taste like a brownie cookie, or brookie :) Anyway, I stocked up on chocolate and went ahead with these Chocolate Chunkers.
There was a lot of chocolate in these cookies! I'm sure that Baker's isn't the best chocolate to use, but it's not that bad, is it? It is the most readily available chocolate and I've never noticed it to be 'bad' -- and I'm not a dark or bittersweet chocolate fan either, so Baker's will have to do. I suppose if I was really into dark or bittersweet chocolate I would search out the fanciest imported chocolates for these cookies, but I didn't, sorry chocolate chunkers, sorry.

I prepared the cookie dough, then seperated it into two bowls and added the chunkies. I did half of the cookies as Dorie suggested, white chocolate (I used Ghirardelli chips), pecans, and golden raisins. These chunkies sounded lovely together to me. I was excited about the combination but I knew my husband would not be, he'd say something like, ugh, raisins, and PECANS, in chocolate cookies? Bleh.

So I decided to make half the batch with chunkies I thought he would enjoy, Reese's Pieces, peanuts, and peanut butter chips. He thought they were 'okay' -- he happened to take a bite of a white chocolate raisin one and was disgusted. Oh-well. I thought they were good, they actually tasted a lot better than they looked. The first pan out of the oven looked like big muddy rocks. The second pan I flattened a bit and they looked more like cookies. If you are a big chocolate fan I'm betting you loved these. I loved the combo of white chocolate, pecans, and golden raisins, I'm betting I would love these as a spice cookie. I'll pass on all that chocolate.

I loved the white chocolate, golden raisins, and pecan combo too! I adore chocolate though, so I was excited about these from the get-go. I think your addition of the Reeses Pieces to half of your dough turns these into fun party cookies!

I think both combinations look good. They look very rich and decadent!

"All that chocolate" is correct! They were almost aggressively chocolate. I'm glad you found a combination you liked. I thought the golden raisins were good also.

if you're not a huge fan of chocolate, it doesn't make sense to spend all the time and money on fancy expensive chocolate! yours look great.

I think it's great that you tried the different combinations. I wish I'd thought to flatten mine before baking--yours look great.

Do you share your recipe for the chocolate cookies made with buttermilk? I"m such a huge fan of anything baked with buttermilk and I'd love to try them. I love those Reese's pieces in these cookeis too.

I'm not a chocolate person either. Give me something chewy & fruity... I'm your girl. They look good! My husband would want the peanut butter kissed ones as well. No raisins for the man!

Confession time: Whenever a recipe calls for expensive chocolate, I use Baker's too. Especially when it calls for over a pound! I love the idea of white chocolate, golden raisins, and pecans in a spice cookie though - that sounds too good.

Reeses pieces and PB chips. Girl you are my kind of woman. Whatever the hubby doesn't want, just send them our way. They look yummy!

Well, at least you tried them. I use Bakers chocolate all the time. It's affordable and readily available at the supermarket.

Ha !! Your husband sounded like mine did. I added golden raisins to half of my cookie dough. He was like ..why would you go and ruin a perfectly good cookie with those nasty raisins..hee-hee. Im sorry you weren't to crazy about the cookies. I LOVE cookies but Im sick of baking them. Im making hte Dimply Plum cake today. It looks super easy and I have some big plums waiting on the counter.

Glad you tried them! I agree, no point in spending lots of money on expensive chocolate unless you really love it. Better luck with the next recipe!
