Caramel Peanut Topped Brownie Cake -- Tuesdays with Dorie

Tammy of Wee Treats by Tammy picked Dorie's Caramel Peanut Topped Brownie Cake for this week's edition of Tuesdays with Dorie. The recipe should be available on her site, but I really didn't care for this so if you do decide to try it, and don't like it, don't be mad at me :)

Sorry, sorry, sorry! TWD baking buddies, I hate giving bad reviews, I want to love every single recipe from Dorie's book, but I don't. Now somethings I am expecting not to like, but this I really though we would all enjoy. This was probably the biggest dissapointment yet because it sounded so good and in my mind I imagined this amazing moist, dense, fudgey brownie base cake with ooey-gooey smooth caramel and crunchy peanuts. The caramel peanut topping was okay, I've made caramel before, and this wasn't the best recipe, why? I don't know. I followed the recipe exactly. It set up just fine, but just something off in the taste, maybe the corn syrup? Once again, I don't know. Oh-well. We had my mom over for dinner and she didn't care for it, my husband didn't like it, and I didn't like it, and I'm rarely one to not like desserts. Just a dissapointment all around, I even got some better quality chocolate, but it was wasted.

For me, the brownie cake part was overly dry, the caramel had that off taste, it just didn't work out, even though I thought it would be a new favorite. Even the pictures didn't turn out well, and it was a delicious looking dessert in person, just didn't taste delicious to us. I'd rather have something kind of ugly that tasted great that something looking super yummy and tasting... eh. Oh-well. In my mind I'm still enjoying that Dimply Plum Cake. I hope next week is a winner!
Okay, I'm going to edit this a bit, I wrote up the first part of my post last night, and did have a tiny taste of cake this morning, just a test :) and it does taste better the second day. And I know I said that the three adults that had dinner didn't like the cake, but forgot to mention that my three children were absolutely in love with it. So there you have it. I guess it wasn't that bad, I think I was just expecting too much.

Hrm... I wish it had gone as well as mine did, I thought this was wonderful. Hopefully next week's won't disappoint?

I agree -- this was not a favorite of mine. I thought it was fine, but definitely not worth all the trouble it caused. I was also disappointed because I assumed based on how this sounded that it would be amazing. Oh well, can't love 'em all, I guess! Yours looks beautiful, though!

Bummer it wasn't a favorite but you can't like them all right? ;)

Im with you I'd rather have it look bad and taste good. Sorry it didn't work out for you..it sure looks good though! Im just so sad you wasted that Schrffen berger chocolate..that's the best stuff around. Hopefully the Biscottis are better!

Oh no sorry you did not like it! This is not my favorite either, but it does look so very tasty!

I wanted to love this so much, just like you. But it just wasn't what I expected. Plus, I burned my caramel. :) Yours looks great!

I am sorry that you're disappointed with the result. Recipes don't always work, don't they? I don't really have this particular book of hers, I just wasn't intrigue by her recipes. I have 2 other book written by her, but then that's not her own recipes, so everything that I've tried from those 2 books, turn out very well.

That is very good chocolate for baking, what a waste!

I had the exact same reaction as you did!! My cake was dry, the caramel tasted funky...not my favorite - which sucks because I was really hoping to love this!! Better luck next time, I guess! :-)

Bummer! Sorry you didn't like it. It looks delicious! Maybe next weeks recipe will be better.

It does look great. I agree that the cake part was a little dry. I did love the topping though - next time I might just put it on French vanilla ice cream.

I think the problem with this recipe is that as it's title says its more of a cake. I like brownies that are dense and almost fudge-like.

I'm sorry you didn't care for it. It does look gorgeous though.

Its too bad you didn't like it - especially since you expected to like it! :(

Oh, darn! It looks so gorgeous. Sorry it wasn't a hit. It was definitely better on day two.

I also had VERY high expectations for this cake. While I did enjoy it, I didn't LOVE it like I thought I would. Good to know that it was better the second day. I thought the cake would be a great base for a brownie sundae. Love the pic of your little one looking at the cake!

Like yours, my kiddos liked the cake more than I did. Or at least the part they ate (no caramel or nuts for them). I agree, I expect something with brownie in the title to be more dense and fudgy and was disappointed when this wasn't.

What a shame that it didn't work out. I also agree the looks are not nearly as important as the taste. Your cake IS pretty, sorry it didn't taste like you wanted it too. Better luck next time. I am kind of glad now I didn't make it. Seems everyone was split about 50/50 on this one.

Oh, too bad! At least the kids liked it!

I too would have preferred a more moist, dense and fudgy cake.

Bummer that it wasn't a bigger hit. You can always count on the kids, though.

I agree with you on the cake: it was too dry!! And my kitty loves to be in photos... I always have to push her out of frame when taking food pictures... This time she won!
